The Supreme Court of California is seemingly leaning towards upholding the legality of Proposition 22, a controversial ballot measure that cemented the idea that app-based drivers are independent contractors, not employees.
The 2020 measure carved out an exemption for app-based services from a 2019 law that narrowed the circumstances where a company can label workers as contractors. In response, gig platform giants Uber, Lyft, and Doordash pushed hard for Prop 22, pouring more than $200m (£157m) to a campaign supporting it.
