EU moves step closer to finalising platform work directive

In another blow to gig economy firms, EU member states reached an agreement this week on new rules to govern the employment relationship between the world’s biggest platform companies and gig workers.

The agreement, announced on Monday, establishes the foundation for considering the bloc’s 28 million digital platform workers as employees, rather than independent contractors, and provides access labour rights and social security benefits.
