German lawmakers last week unanimously approved an amendment to the Works Constitution Act (BetrVG), providing clearer rules on remuneration for works council members.

In its earlier form, the BetrVG states that anyone elected to a works council must not be “disadvantaged or favoured because of their work,” and that members cannot earn less “than the wages of comparable employees with normal professional development in the company”.
