South Korea’s Supreme Court has recognised the death of a software engineer from leukaemia as an industrial accident.

On 11 July, the 3rd Division of the Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling in favour of the bereaved family of engineer Jang Mo, who claimed he died after contracting the cancer as a result of working at Samsung Electronics.

The court dismissed the appeal by government body, the Korea Workers’ Compensation and Welfare Service (K-COMWEL), which had turned down the family’s application for compensation in 2018.
