Ride-hailing giant Uber is to provide its UK Muslim drivers with the option of a Sharia-compliant pension fund following threats of legal action by a gig workers’ union.

Uber launched the first-ever pension scheme for workers in the private hire vehicle and ride-hailing industry in September 2021. The announcement followed a February 2021 decision from the UK Supreme Court holding that drivers who use the ride-hailing app are “workers” and entitled to employment benefits, including minimum wage and holiday pay.
