The Dutch Data Protection Authority (DPA) has issued international ride-hailing giant Uber the biggest fine in the agency’s existence for unlawfully transferring the personal data of drivers from the Netherlands to the United States.

The investigation began in 2021 following a complaint from French drivers to the Commission Nationale de l’informatique et des Libertés (CNIL), the DPA’s French equivalent. Since Uber’s European headquarters is based in the Netherlands, the matter was passed on to them.
