BIPA reform makes biometric monitoring easier for Illinois firms

Illinois’ House of Representatives last week voted overwhelmingly in favour of revisions to the state’s strict Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA), which aims to lighten punishments for employers caught using biometric data unlawfully.

Under current rules, companies that collect their employees’ biometric information without first obtaining written consent will receive a separate fine for each instance that data is collected.
