China will raise its statutory retirement ages from next year as it struggles with an ageing population, declining birthrates, and a state pension scheme rapidly running out of funds.

The Standing Committee on the National People’s Congress, China’s top legislative body, passed the reform on 13 September after an announcement earlier in the week.
