Dutch footballer Anwar El Ghazi had his contract with German team FSV Mainz 05 wrongfully terminated over comments he made on the Israel-Gaza conflict, a German court found last week.

The 29-year-old winger was first suspended on 17 October 2023 when, after the 7 October Hamas attack, he posted a message to Instagram expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people using the phrase “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”.
