In a blow to President Joe Biden’s pro-worker agenda, the US Supreme Court on Friday overturned a long-standing legal doctrine that potentially cripples the ability of federal agencies to interpret and enforce regulations.

Since 1984 the “Chevron deference” allowed courts to defer to federal agencies in disputes over the interpretation of ambiguous language in federal legislation, giving agencies considerable power to take action on pressing issues while Congress considered new laws.
