The Japanese government will criminalise cannabis later this year following a significant increase in crimes linked to the drug over the last 12 months. 

2023 saw a record 6,482 cannabis-related crimes investigated, an increase of 1,140 from the previous year. Over 70% of those investigated were teenagers and young adults, according to police data.
