Gig platform giant Uber and its subsidiary Postmates lost their long-running battle to change California law on Monday, after the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals rejected their argument that the state’s contractor rules unfairly singled out app-based transportation businesses. 

Known as Assembly Bill 5 (AB5), the law, passed in 2019, sets a high bar for companies to prove that their workers are independent contractors rather than employees.
