Labour rights campaigners wary of artificial intelligence’s encroachment into the workplace are unlikely to be impressed by a new system that evaluates employees’ smiles.

Japanese supermarket chain Aeon recently deployed the new AI tool, known as “Mr Smile”, across its stores to rate the quantity and quality of staff smiles on customers.
